Rome Vacation Tips: how do to everything in Rome

Rome Vacation Tips background

Rome Vacation Tips was started by a husband and wife team: one an academic born and bred in Rome, and one a native English speaker with a background in journalism and tourism. We are both inveterate travellers with decades of experience living and visiting around the world, and we are committed to improving visitors’ experience of the city we live in.

Who are we?

At the heart of Rome Vacation Tips are people who have a love for the city of Rome, and the sights, sounds, and atmosphere it provides. We are individuals who love travelling through, and experiencing everything that Rome has to offer.

From the grand monuments and architecture, to the local cuisine and wine, we firmly believe that Rome has something to capture the hearts of everyone, like it has done for us.

With decades of experience, we are deeply experienced in all things Rome, and we have the tips, tricks, and insight from the locals so that we can pass on that knowledge to you – so you can start enhancing you adventures in Rome.

Mind the gap

Rome Vacation Tips was set up in 2014 to fill in a glaring information gap for visitors between the glossy travel guides, and the often-inadequate information offered by Rome’s infrastructure and tourism centers.

Despite the city’s popularity as one of the hotspots of global mass tourism, there’s often a lack of available information about many aspects of visiting the city: for example while there were plenty of sources of information on luxury hotels and how to visit the Trevi Fountain, at the time there was nowhere to find out how to order coffee, buy cigarettes, or to get a ticket for Rome’s public transport.

Beginning with a series of articles on how to do the basics in Rome, the site has grown and evolved over the years to encompass a wide range of advice about how to make the most out of your visit, where to stay, how to visit with children, and a host of other vital sources – all written with deep insider knowledge, but with profound empathy for the traveler.

We’ve also partnered up with independent tour operators: real people we actually know IRL, rather than faceless corporations – to provide incredible insights into the history and context of the city, to truly give you the best experience you can possibly get during your visit.

Honesty is the best policy

Anyone who has lived in Rome for many years is keenly aware that the city as some very particular problems. Many of our competitors gloss over the occasional negative aspect of visiting Rome, but we consciously avoid doing that: whether it’s common scams, problems with refuse management, or whether or not an attraction is worth your time, we give it to you straight – and we give you all the advice you need to avoid the pitfalls, as well as comprehensive information on what to do if things do go wrong.

An AI-free zone

This site is 100% written by real people who live in Rome and experience the city on a daily basis. We do not believe that AI large-language models – however convincing they sound – are sufficiently informed about on-the-ground realities of visiting a city, and nor do we think that artificial “intelligence” can ever truly understand the needs of travelers.

Unfortunately many of our competitors have started to use these tools, and the lack of quality shows: if you find that you are reading a superficially well-written article about Rome but you come away from it feeling like you have learned very little, or have just been subjected to a bland sales pitch, chances are that you’re suffering from someone’s lazy overreliance on AI.

To avoid this, only accept genuine human-written information of the kind we provide at Rome Vacation Tips.
